Is Israel Occupying the West Bank? (with Eugene Kontorovich) 7/1/24
To international law expert Eugene Kontorovich of George Mason University, all the arguments that make Israel out to be an occupying force collapse under the weight of a single, simple fact: A country cannot occupy territory to which it has a legal claim. Listen as Kontorovich speaks with EconTalk’s Russ Roberts about the legal issues surrounding occupation as well as the moral issues of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. They also discuss the crazy-quilt legal environment of jurisdiction in the West Bank in the aftermath of the Oslo Accords of 1993. Finally, they explore the likely outcomes of current proposals for a Palestinian state in the West Bank.

If you're always imitating others or aspiring to be something else, what’s left of the “authentic” you? According to the French philosopher Rene Girard, not much: Nothing can be truly authentic, he argued everything comes from somewhere else. This is just one of the many original and counterintuitive claims put forth in Girard’s sweeping approach to human history. He argues it is sameness, not ...

Israel today constitutes 77% of Mandatory Palestine. There are basically as many Palestinians as there are Jews in what used to be Mandatory Palestine. If Israel is unable to abide the establishment of Palestinian self determination on the remaining 23% of Mandatory Palestine, there is no realistic prospect of peace in our time.

Where’s the land acknowledgment recognizing 3000 years of Jewish history in the West Bank? The WB is REAL Israel, where Jewish history and civilization developed. This place is core of Jewish identity. When Jews thought about the land of israel this is where they thought about. Jerusalem, Shiloh, Bet El, Schem, Bet Lehem, Hebron. From Ephraim to Binyamin to Yehuda.

Ah, like the hundreds of thousands of Arabs who emigrated to the Palestine region in the late 19th century and early 20th century, and whose descendants dupe people like you into believing that they have ties to the land that go back centuries?

Btw, Israel is 20+% Arab citizens. There are virtually no Jews left in any of the Muslim countries. But yeah, keep criticizing Israel for "ethnic cleansing" - it's beyond obvious that you just hate Jews.

    • @MB-eh4ss

USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand could be yes. However, they apologize to the indigenous people there and give them full rights. They don't distinguish rights based on religion or ethnicity. However, Israel practices ethnic cleansing and occupies the land of Arabs (Muslims and Christians) living within Israeli borders. Although they have citizenship, they don't have the same rights as Jews. The West Bank is occupied by Israel, and inside it, Jews have rights that are not given to Palestinians, although they live side by side. So, the situation with Israel is much worse as it's a pure example of an apartheid regime.

Thank you for this very interesting discussion. Would that the leadership of Europe's nations and the U.S. were not dominated by fools devoted to critical race theory and were willing to join Israel in destroying the Islamist murderers throughout the Middle East and their own countries. It's all very depressing. Long live Israel and what's left of the free world. If the Islamists win, they'll take us back to the middle ages and most of the world's population will die off because that kind of world can't support as many people as there are and it will be mired in constant warfare.

Roberts, as an economist, should appreciate the power of comparative competitive advantage in our evolving morality: A free man contributes more to the GDP of a modern country than a slave could. This was not so in the past. For example, an ancient tribe could maybe double its workforce to build a fortification or temple by raiding the next tribe for slaves. The equivalent would be simply impossible now. It is more efficient to build more machines to do the work. A similar argument applies to things like equality. We are simply the most economically efficient societies ascribing moral value to, what are, essentially, economic decisions and humans apparently increasing moral value is driven, not by moral "progress" but by the decrease in their physical labour value (True they have a high intellectual labour value but that is much harder to appropriate through coercive means)

Wherever Jews and Christians live in Muslim-controlled lands, they are subjugated, humbled #dhimmis. Of course they had to "live in peace" because they had few rights!!! What do you make of the spirit of the imagination that paints the illusion that we wish to identify with, that seems to be at the controls of the machinery that generates our thoughts, motivations and will? Is our mythology collective and somehow part of nature, too? Since all living things are born, live and then die, isn’t the prime responsibility of our collective consciousness primarily the protecting of the collective future that we pass along to our children?🙂

Professor Munger begins by talking about large price fluctuations, like the 1929 stock market price collapse, as an example of markets not getting prices right. Professor Roberts responds with a discussion of the Wright brothers' innovation and how it came about, but Roberts fails to fully enunciate why this augurs against Munger's case that Pigou was wiser than we give him credit for in arguing for bodies of experts to play greater roles. What I wish Roberts would have seen is that it is impossible for prices to be gotten right by anyone when there are with goods that have not yet been invented, no way for anyone to get the prices (of yet-to-be-invented goods) right. So Munger's emphasis of Pigou's desire to "get prices right" seems largely inapplicable to what Schumpeter considered the most essential process advantaging capitalism -- namely, creative destruction. I wonder if Pigou gave any thought to Schumpeter?

" COVID-19 a decoy for launching the mRNA LNP vaccine platform" There exists a parallel between severe illness from COVID and that of vaccine induced side effects. The common denominator is the over expression of the pathogenic spike protein and the inability of the host to eliminate it. In the case of the infection it is the systemic entry of the pathogen (modified virus used as a vector for the mRNA expressing the spike protein). Whereas in the case of the vaccine the successful and uncontrolled transfection of the lipoprotein coated mRNA resulting in acute and subacute injuries. And its integration into the host gene via reverse transcription resulting in more chronic and life long injuries (representing long covid post infection). One cannot rule out the fact that both the modified virus as vector for antigenic mRNA (SARS COV2) via inhalation and the mRNA LNP a alternative antigenic mRNA delivery formulation via injection, was an attempt to create and investigate a new form of vaccine delivery technology. The former became an infection going out of control in the test subjects resulting in a plandemic and the latter was repurposed into a possible treatment for the infection. The zoonosis theory and the lab leak theory have become a potential alibi for the above crime.. The entire pipeline of mRNA LNP based vaccines were well underway before the pandemic. The pandemic proved to be a feasible proof of concept evaluation and an opportunity for large clinical trial to convince the population and coerce the regulatory authorities to endorse this heinous technology.
